China launches first large-scale wind turbine repurposing project in Jiuquan

China has initiated its first large-scale project to repurpose retired wind turbines in Jiuquan, Gansu province, remanufacturing 25 turbines that have been in service for over 15 years.

These turbines have suffered from equipment aging, reduced efficiency, and increasing maintenance costs, meeting retirement criteria. China Resources Recycling Group's New Energy Technology Co has deployed experts to inspect and assess components and has crafted a comprehensive repurposing strategy using proprietary techniques for damage repair and performance enhancement.

The remanufactured prototypes show significantly improved performance, with some components approaching the quality of new market models. These turbines can now be used in various scenarios, including distributed wind power and industrial auxiliary power.

This approach, unlike traditional disposal methods such as landfilling or incineration, increases the utilization rate of retired turbines from 30 percent to 70 percent, avoiding environmental pollution and land use issues.

New Energy Technology Co is partnering with Jiuquan to establish China's first comprehensive recycling and repurposing base, with plans to develop a three-level recycling system of a central base, sorting center, and warehouse, accelerating the growth of wind and solar resources and promoting the standardized, large-scale, high-value disposal of retired energy equipment.
