Jiuquan's Subei Mongolian autonomous county came alive on Feb 6 with a lively display of horse decorations and performances.

The event opened with a powerful procession of nine riders, dressed in traditional winter ethnic costumes and holding the Sulde — a sacred Mongolian war spear — in hand, who rode in with red silk ribbons trailing behind them, embodying the bold and fearless spirit of these grassland people.

A traditional wedding scene followed, with a newlywed couple in gold-embroidered garments. Khadas — ceremonial scarves — fluttered in the wind, while songs filled the air, perfectly capturing the solemnity and romance of a grassland wedding ceremony.

Horse teams and actors portrayed figures from different eras, blending ancient and modern attire, with their juxtaposition of traditional armor and modern outfits illustrating horse culture's rich history and contemporary vibrancy.

In the afternoon, a beauty contest showcased horses adorned with intricate tack, highlighting Mongolian craftsmanship passed down through generations.

The event culminated in a relay race, with 40 riders cracking their whips and racing their horses fiercely toward the finish line. The thundering hooves and cheering crowd created a thrilling atmosphere, marking the beginning of a new year on the open plains.
