The Jiuquan dibengzi, a highly popular traditional folk dance, was staged on Feb 3 at the Gansu province's Chinese New Year 2026 intangible cultural heritage promotion and exhibition series in Wudu district, Longnan, vividly presenting the distinctive charm of this age-old heritage art.

Moving with spirited agility to vigorous drumbeats, the artists wove the resonant tones of ox-hide drums together with the bright clangs of gongs and cymbals.

This rich soundscape, enhanced by the inheritors' improvised lyrical verses, infused every gesture and expression with the unique character of Hexi Corridor folk traditions centuries in the making — culminating in a crescendo of energy that captivated all present.

With deep historical foundations and pronounced artistic features, Jiuquan dibengzi stands as a centerpiece of Jiuquan's folk Shehuo performances. Widely practiced across Suzhou, Jinta, Gaotai and neighboring regions, it was officially listed among Gansu's first group of provincial-level intangible cultural heritage items in 2006.

Integrating spoken recitation and singing with dynamic, uplifting percussion, Jiuquan dibengzi embodies the bold and hearty spirit of Northwest China.

Typically performed during Spring Festival, its song-and-dance form enjoys enduring popularity among local communities. The art also carries undertones of prayer and ceremonial symbolism, reflecting its roots in traditional cultural practices.
