Dunhuang achieves 247 days of full green electricity supply

A county-level city in Northwest China has maintained 100 percent green electricity supply for 247 consecutive days. This energy transition milestone has been achieved in Dunhuang, Gansu province. According to official data, from February 29 to November 2, 2024, Dunhuang successfully maintained green electricity supply across all areas and time periods.

This achievement was verified through systematic data analysis. The State Grid Dunhuang Power Supply Company, while reviewing local green electricity consumption patterns, found that during this period, the Shazhou 750kV substation, Dunhuang's only power transmission channel, received no conventional power from the main grid and instead exported surplus green electricity. Analysis of output curves from wind, solar, hydro and energy storage facilities confirmed that local renewable generation consistently exceeded consumption. With no conventional power plants in operation, this verified Dunhuang's complete reliance on green electricity.

The challenge of renewable energy intermittency was addressed through integrated energy solutions. "Our success relies on coordinated operation of multiple renewable sources," says Li Jintao, director of the Command Center at the State Grid.

Dunhuang has developed a diversified renewable energy infrastructure with a total installed capacity of 2.89 million kilowatts. This includes wind, solar, hydro and storage facilities, all producing clean energy.

As a Category 1 region for solar thermal resources, Dunhuang has invested significantly in concentrated solar power (CSP) technology. Projects such as Shouhang hi-tech's 100MW molten salt tower CSP plant provide critical storage capabilities. The molten salt system stores thermal energy captured during daylight hours, enabling electricity generation during nighttime and adverse weather conditions. This technology also allows for storage of excess wind and solar power, improving grid stability and renewable energy integration.

The State Grid has developed a smart distribution network supporting this green electricity system. The renewable energy infrastructure now powers all sectors, from tourist attractions and the Dunhuang Cultural Expo venues, to industrial production and residential consumption.
